3rd grade “Getting to know students” lunch

3rd grade teachers, Mrs Wellmon & Mrs Vines, implemented a new plan this year to get to know their students. Mrs Wellmon and Mrs Vines write students names on a piece of paper and put in a jar. Monday thru Thursday, their homeroom teacher takes 1 or 2 names out of the jar and the student gets to have lunch with the teachers. Fridays are pizza days and they are allowed to sit with their friends from either class as a reward for good behavior. There is not a quiet time for these students as the teachers take the opportunity to get to know their students on a more personal level. Teachers ask them questions about their favorite subject, favorite book, family traditions, and what did they do on the weekend. The questions vary depending on the student at the table. They talk about sports, favorite tv shows, video games or anything the teachers think the students are interested in. At first, some of the students resisted because they did not think it would be fun to sit with their teachers, but now Mrs Wellmon & Mrs Vines are reminded daily, “Did you pick the names yet?” and “Who is the VIP today?” Both teachers say It is a lot of fun to get to know their students better and interact with them on a more relaxed level. Way to go Mrs Wellmon & Mrs Vines!!!
